Job Posting: Cold Case Investigation Assistant (Contract Position)
Location: Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General – Bureau of Criminal Investigation
Schedule: Full-Time, 35 hours/week

The Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is seeking a Cold Case Investigation Assistant (CCIA) to support our Cold Case Unit and the ongoing “Closure Project.” This is a unique opportunity to work on meaningful cases that make a real difference in the lives of victims and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

• Serve as the RIAG’s Cold Case Liaison with the RI Department of Health’s Forensic Laboratory
• Support the “Closure Project” Manager with data collection, organization, and grant reporting for the U.S. Department of Justice
• Track and fulfill all cold case requests between the Attorney General’s Office and RIDOH
• Conduct file searches and locate evidence, including travel to off-site storage facilities
• Attend weekly cold case meetings and other related events or sessions as needed
• Manage reporting requirements and complete all documentation according to established policies and timelines
• Provide general administrative and investigative support to the Cold Case Unit Team

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required (preferred fields: forensic science, criminal justice, sociology, law, physiology, data science, or a related field)
• 3–5 years of experience in the criminal justice system or a related field
• Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, Excel, etc.) and the ability to learn new systems
• Excellent time management and written communication skills
• Familiarity with forensic processes and criminal justice systems is a plus; training will be provided
• Ability to attend meetings at various sites; reliable transportation is required
• Flexibility to work evenings or weekends with notice

Additional Requirements:

• All candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive background check
• A DNA sample will be required for entry into RIDOH’s Elimination Database to prevent contamination of forensic evidence
  (The sample is securely held and used solely for contamination prevention protocols.)
